Sustainability: a simple 3 legged stool

Today, I will co-present “Success through Sustainability” at the Government Procurement Conference at the Arlington Convention Center.

While doing the standard last minute revisions on the topic, I had an epiphany regarding what I really want the attendants to leave with.  As I was assembling statistics and measurements and definitions, I realized that the most basic piece of knowledge I wanted them to depart with is the fact that Sustainability is basic.

I want them (and you) to understand the simplicity and flexibility of Sustainability.  It is not hard to take the first step and with minor balanced focus, it is not hard to maintain momentum.
Sustainability at its most fundamental level is simple.  It isn’t always some overly detailed algorithm. It can be simple, but it must also be multi-faceted.  You can launch your pursuit of Business Sustainability at any time and from any angle.  But the launch must be strategic and not a knee jerk reaction.

We can best explain Business Sustainability – and balancing the triple bottom line – with a concept of a 3-legged stool.  What happens if one of the legs is too short or not there at all? Imagine yourself trying to sit on this wobbly stool.  Now imagine your business as “wobbly”. Which leg do you address first?

Tackling Sustainability can be that simple, but you must constantly consider the length of all your stool legs and give each the same intensity of focus.  You can never allow one leg to receive too much attention, consistently. This juggling act can feel awkward at first, but once you hit your stride – it is easily maintainable, especially when you see the results.

We can help you develop a simple repair plan for that wobbly stool!
